Backup to Disk

A faster backup/restore performance is one good reason to consider moving from tape backup to a disk-based backup solution. However, many organizations are considering disk-based in order to gain higher reliability and greater backup/restore performance than traditional tape backups can offer. A magnetic tape is a fragile medium. Tapes can break and are vulnerable to environmental factors. Due to these and other factors, data is not always restored perfectly. Experts estimate that 25 to 50% of restore operations from tape fail (partially)!

Disks are a more durable solution than tape. Disks last longer and they can easily perform multiple, frequent overwriting. Additionally, disks are less sensitive for environmental influences. Disk backups are far easier to manage. A large collection of tapes is a logistical nightmare. Restoring from disk is significantly easier and faster due to continuous availability and therefore reduces cost of ownership. And finally, with the availability of larger disks at ever decreasing prices, disk becomes a viable alternative for tape as a backup medium.

The BackupAgent solution

The technology of BackupAgent fully leverages all the benefits from disk backup. All stored backup data is continuously available online and directly accessible for restore purposes. The BackupAgent software compresses all data and has embedded incremental technology that reduces the data transmission. This means that the backup windows are shorter. A data set that would take hours to backup on tape can be easily backed up online and stored remote by the BackupAgent software in minutes.

The BackupAgent Solution is very scalable. The technology allows the storage capacity for every user to be very easily extended: multiple storage locations can be added and backup data can be migrated in a few mouse-clicks. With tape, once the maximum capacity of a tape library is reached, additional capacity cannot be added incrementally; another costly tape library must be purchased.
